Agility is the number 1 dog sport in the UK and is growing every year in popularity. Training methods are constantly changing to improve consistancy and accuracy so I try to keep up-to-date on new strategies.
Agility should be fun for both dog and owner, therefore our training sessions are relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.
Initially I ask each dog and handler to come for a one-to-one session that last approximately 1 hour. This will enable me to decide if the dog is fit enough, whether he is happy to do agility and if I think agility will be good for him. Once we have all agreed that he would really like to have a go and is happy he can move into one of our classes.
Our Beginners Class works on building your dogs confidence, ensuring your dog wants to work for you, that you have a partnership and trying out simple courses to encourage the dog during lessons. Once your dog is confident on all the pieces of equipment and is listening to your commands you can move up to the Advanced Class.
In our Advanced Classes we sometimes work on full courses of 20 obstacles so dogs and handlers get experienced in coping with competition class structure. We let them walk the course and run it as they think is correct. The Course is then broken down into sections where individually they can iron out any mistakes or try new tactics to improve their positions. Our pupils are given the opportunity to run the Course until they get it right from start to finish, then we will concentrate on specific problems each handler is having.
To get the very best out of your dog he must continue to be happy and confident so we spend a lot of time convincing them, if necessary, that agility is great fun. Training for agility isn't always just about how fast you can get your dog around the course, sometimes its about encouraging a behaviour that will aid your dog's training so, sometimes, our pupils are given homework that can be done out on a walk or in the home, to practice over the week.
We also have two sets of equipment laid out so dogs can get used to having another dog running in their vicinity. This is vital if you are hoping your dog will one day do competitions.
This level of attention is possible as we do not have any more than 6 dogs in each class and can afford to give each handler the time they need. We ensure all handlers get the same amount of time working their dog on the Course regardless of their level.
We feel our commitment to our pupils does not end there and will support them if they would like to enter an agility show. We advise which shows/classes to enter, getting your dog measured, ensuring all entry paperwork is completed on time etc.
Lessons lasting one hour are £7 per dog. One-to-one training is available @ £10 per hour.
The equipment is available for hire @ £20 for the first dog, £10 for the second dog and £5 for the 3rd dog per hour. This is subject to availability.
